What renting a game server actually costs

We read the pricing pages of thirteen hosting providers. The advertised number is not the one you pay, and the gap between them is the whole story.

Game server hosting is advertised at about seven dollars a month, and that is the first-month price. That figure is real, in the sense that somebody will charge you it. It is also the price for one month out of however many you end up paying for.

We read the published pricing pages of thirteen providers in September 2026, across budget, mid-market and premium hosts, and wrote down what they actually charge.

The headline number

Across twelve of them, the median list price is $2.96 per gigabyte of memory per month, ranging from $1.00 to $5.00. With the discounts these hosts run more or less permanently, the effective rate is closer to $2.40.

For the sizes people actually buy:

MemoryTypical monthlyRange
2 GB$6.30$5.18 to $10.00
4 GB$14.38$4.99 to $20.00
8 GB$27.99$7.99 to $40.00
16 GB$49.99$15.99 to $79.98

A 4 GB server, which is a reasonable size for a group of friends on most survival games, is about $14 a month. Over three years that is $518.

The part nobody advertises

Setup fees are gone. Not one of the thirteen managed hosts charged one, which is a genuine improvement on a few years ago. DDoS protection is included everywhere too, rather than being the upsell it used to be.

The thing that costs you money now is renewal.

Advertised prices are first-month offers. One host lists 4 GB at $8.99 and renews at $14.99. Another advertises $6.99 and renews at $9.98. A third advertises 61 to 67 per cent off, which requires paying for twenty-four months up front, and renews at two to three times the rate you signed at. Across the sample, the recurring price runs about 25 per cent above the headline, and considerably more than that at the aggressive end.

So the number to plan with is not the one on the pricing page. It is the one on your thirteenth invoice.

Paying annually

The honest saving for committing to a year is about 20 per cent. One host publishes the whole ladder: $2.99 per gigabyte monthly, $2.70 quarterly, $2.55 semi-annually, $2.40 annually.

Twenty per cent is a real discount. It is also twelve months of a server bought in advance for a group that may lose interest in March, which most groups do.

Does the game change the price?

Less than people think. Six of the ten providers we could compare charge identically for Valheim, Palworld, 7 Days to Die and Minecraft. Where prices do differ, Palworld runs 25 to 50 per cent above Valheim, which is the reputation it has earned by being genuinely memory-hungry. Minecraft is not systematically cheaper, and at one host it was the most expensive of the four.

The real outliers are ARK and Rust, at two to five times the rest. If you are pricing those, none of the figures above apply.

Working it out for your own case

The calculator takes a memory size and a number of years and gives the monthly rate, the spread across providers and the total. Every figure traces back to this survey, and the page says how many providers and on what date, because an average with no sample size behind it is just a number someone liked.

The alternative

None of this is an argument that hosts are overcharging. They are running hardware in a datacentre and answering support tickets, and $14 a month for that is not outrageous.

It is an argument that you may not need it. If you already have a PC that stays on, the machine is paid for and idle, and the software to run a dedicated server on it is free. ServerSync does that part: it installs the server, writes the config and hands your friends an address, without a port to forward or a monthly bill.

Whether that is worth it depends on whether your PC is on anyway. The $518 figure is there so you can make that call with the real number rather than the advertised one.
