ServerSync now runs on Linux

ServerSync has a native Linux build, tested on CachyOS. It is also half the size it was, and it can now tell you when something happens.

A lot of the machines that make good game servers are not running Windows. The old desktop in the cupboard, the mini PC under the TV, the gaming rig that dual boots: plenty of them run Linux, and until now ServerSync could not run on any of them.

It can now. This update brings a native Linux build, a much smaller download, and local notifications.

Linux support

ServerSync now ships a Linux build alongside the Windows one. Development and testing were done on CachyOS, which is based on Arch, so other Arch-based distributions should work the same way.

Other distributions have not been tested yet. If you run ServerSync on one and something breaks, tell us on Discord with the name of your distribution and what happened. That is the fastest way for a distribution to go from probably fine to known to work.

If Steam installs the Windows build

Steam sometimes downloads the Windows build on a Linux machine and runs it through Proton instead. You can force it to use the Linux build:

  1. Right click ServerSync in your Steam library and open Properties
  2. Go to Compatibility
  3. Turn on Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool
  4. Pick Steam Linux Runtime 1.0

Steam will then fetch the Linux build the next time it updates the app.

Half the size

ServerSync is a lot smaller than it was, on every platform.

The download is less than half what it was, and the install takes about 40 percent of the space it used to. That matters most on the machines people actually leave running as servers, which tend to be the older ones with the smaller drives.

Local notifications

ServerSync can now raise notifications on the machine it runs on, so you find out what your server is doing without keeping the window open.

Where to find it

Linux support is part of the current beta. If you do not have a key yet, ask on Discord. The same place is where to report a distribution that does not work, or a game you want supported next.
